Help to save the life of another cat or dog by donating to Moorview’s blood bank.
We have now set up our own pet blood bank. Just like humans vets can use blood from donor dogs and cats to help treat a variety of conditions. These conditions can often be life threatening. We are presently looking for owners who are willing to add their animals onto our pet donor list.
Is my pet suitable to be a blood donor?
Dogs need to be fit and well, fully vaccinated, never travelled abroad, between 1 and 8 years of age and over 25 kg.
Cats need to be fit and well, fully vaccinated, never travelled abroad, between 1 and 8 years of age and greater than 4 kg.
What does it involve?
Your dog or cat would need to come in and be examined and have a blood test taken to type their blood and do a health screen. As a thank you the patient would get their next annual booster free. The animal will then be added to our donor list and should we need some blood in an emergency we would contact you to ask if you were available to bring them down to give some blood.
Are there any side effects from giving blood?
Generally, there are not. We would check your pet before they went home to ensure there were no side effects.
I’m interested. What do I do now?
